Onboard Illumination and Lighting Survey

Adequate illumination supports safe movement, visual tasks, machinery operation, maintenance and emergency response. WHY THIS SURVEY MATTERS

Evidence before assumption.

A space may appear bright while still containing poorly illuminated controls, shadowed work surfaces, dark stairs or uneven passageways. A documented survey distinguishes general impressions from repeatable lux measurements and identifies where further review or corrective action is required.

APPLICABLE BASIS

The governing requirement comes first.

There is no single universal lux limit for every vessel space. The applicable criteria must be confirmed from the vessel type, flag, classification requirements, contractual specification, occupational guidance and intended visual task. The report identifies the agreed basis and avoids applying unrelated shore-based criteria without review.

Clients may describe this requirement as a ship light survey, onboard illumination test, vessel lux measurement, marine lighting inspection, shipboard light-level assessment, lighting adequacy check or emergency-lighting measurement.

01Is this the same as a low-location lighting survey?+

No. A general illumination survey measures lighting for tasks, movement and selected operational conditions. Low-location lighting is a specialised escape-route marking system with separate requirements.

02Do you measure during normal and emergency power conditions?+

The operating condition is agreed before attendance. Normal, emergency or selected lighting configurations can be included when safe access, vessel procedures and the project purpose permit.

03Can one lux requirement be used throughout the vessel?+

Usually not. Appropriate criteria depend on the space, visual task, vessel specification and governing requirement.

04What instrument is used?+

A calibrated illuminance meter suitable for the agreed measurement range and method is used, with instrument details recorded in the report.
