Pre-Delivery and Sea-Trial Measurement Services
Acceptance trials compress months of design and construction into a limited operational window. Vessel Doctor coordinates multiple specialist measurement scopes around the vessel’s trial programme, reducing duplicated setup and giving owners, yards and consultants a coherent record of performance.

STANDARDS & PROJECT CRITERIA
The governing basis comes first.
Use the vessel’s approved trial agenda, building specification, maker data, relevant IMO/ISO/class rules and owner requirements. Resolve conflicts between criteria before trials begin and identify which body has final acceptance authority.
Acceptance remains subject to the applicable flag administration, classification society, contract, vessel specification and authorised reviewing party.
ASIA + WORLDWIDE ATTENDANCE
Pre-Delivery and Sea-Trial Measurement Services wherever the vessel needs it.
Vessel Doctor coordinates this service for vessels in Singapore, India, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Thailand, wider Asian maritime centres and ports worldwide. The scope can support technical managers, marine superintendents, ship agents, owners, operators, shipyards and consultants who need documented onboard evidence.
How clients describe this need: Projects may be described as vessel sea-trial measurement, ship pre-delivery testing, newbuilding acceptance survey, commissioning checks and shipyard handover testing. Clients may also report that the owner, yard or consultant needs to know what must be measured and documented before the vessel is delivered or accepted. Depending on the technical question, the attendance may involve sea-trial testing, pre-delivery measurement, acceptance survey, commissioning verification, inspection, evaluation or retesting during harbour trials, sea trials, delivery, handover, guarantee verification, conversion, repowering or post-punch-list retesting. We confirm the final scope from the vessel, operating condition, access, applicable criteria, measurement purpose and required reporting outcome.
SERVICE FAQ
Questions project teams ask.
Every scope is confirmed against the actual vessel, timing and decision requirement.
01How early should trial planning start?+
Ideally during the design or commissioning phase, and at minimum before the final trial agenda is fixed.
02Can multiple surveys run during one sea trial?+
Often yes, but operating conditions, staffing, sensor setup and interference must be coordinated carefully.
03What if the required operating condition cannot be achieved?+
Record the limitation and agree whether an alternative condition, engineering justification or repeat trial is acceptable to the responsible parties.
04Can you attend on behalf of the owner?+
Independent technical attendance can be scoped, but contractual authority and reporting lines must be defined.
PRE-DELIVERY MEASUREMENT PLAN
Convert the trial programme into measurable acceptance evidence.
Pre-delivery testing, harbour-trial measurements, sea-trial monitoring and commissioning verification should start from the contract question. Vessel Doctor builds a focused measurement package for noise, vibration, environmental and habitability evidence; it does not replace the yard's complete sea-trial programme or the attending surveyor.
Lock the decision
Identify the specification, notation, class or flag review, maker requirement, owner limit, complaint or baseline that each measurement must answer.
Assign conditions and runs
Map berth, harbour trial, manoeuvring, steady RPM, speed, load, sea state and simultaneous machinery to each location and parameter.
Make results comparable
Synchronise timestamps, RPM and load logs, vessel configuration, instrument calibration, photographs, exceptions and repeat runs.
Separate pass, exception and retest
Present measured evidence against the agreed basis, record limitations and isolate defects that need adjustment, investigation or witnessed retesting.
| Project question | Relevant Vessel Doctor measurement | Typical operating point |
|---|---|---|
| Are cabins, work spaces and machinery areas within the agreed noise basis? | Onboard noise survey, octave-band evidence and source/path investigation where required. | Specified propulsion and auxiliary load, HVAC state and representative occupancy configuration. |
| Why does a cabin, deck or structure shake at one RPM? | Habitability vibration, structural vibration or machinery diagnostics selected by the response location. | Controlled RPM sweep, steady holds and repeatable machinery combinations. |
| Can alarms and announcements be heard and understood? | PA/GA audibility and speech-intelligibility testing with ambient-noise and receiver-location mapping. | Specified quiet and representative operating conditions under the agreed test procedure. |
| Are ventilation, comfort, air quality and lighting ready for handover? | HVAC performance, IAQ, thermal comfort and illumination measurements as contractually relevant. | Agreed occupancy, HVAC mode, equipment load, doors and environmental state. |
| Has a correction solved the acceptance exception? | Targeted diagnostic measurement using the same locations, method and operating state, with documented deviations. | Comparable retest condition rather than an uncontrolled demonstration. |
Information needed before mobilisation
Provide the vessel type and IMO number, shipyard and trial area, delivery stage, class and flag, test specification, general arrangement, machinery particulars, RPM/load schedule, planned sea-trial runs, receiver or measurement locations, witnessing parties, reporting deadline and known exceptions. Natural requests such as “the cabin is shaking,” “the machine is vibrating,” “the alarm cannot be heard” or “the air feels stuffy” are translated into separate measurement hypotheses rather than one undifferentiated sea-trial check.
Submission and acceptance boundary
Requirements for ABS, BV, CCS, CRS, DNV, IRS, KR, LR, ClassNK, PRS, RINA, Türk Loydu and relevant flag administrations depend on vessel, notation, contract, measurement category and attending surveyor. Agree witnessing, supplier qualification, calculation format and acceptance criteria before the trial. Vessel Doctor provides the commissioned measurement scope and report; final acceptance remains with the authorised owner, yard, class, flag or contractual reviewer. No approval or guaranteed acceptance is claimed.
